Rabbits require specific veterinary care and preventative health measures to ensure a long and healthy life. Below you will find key information regarding vaccinations, parasite control, neutering, training and microchipping.
There are two vaccines available for the prevention of fatal diseases in rabbits. These vaccines protect against Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD).
Both diseases are usually fatal in unprotected rabbits.
Rabbits can start their vaccination programme as early as 6 weeks of age.
A Myxomatosis vaccine booster is usually given yearly in May / early June, providing immunity during the period when the disease is most common.
The vaccine lasts for about 6 months, although in some circumstances another booster may be required to ensure continued protection.
A Viral Haemorrhagic Disease vaccine booster is given yearly.
The microchip is inserted under the skin between the shoulder blades and carries a unique 15-digit number specific to your rabbit.
This number is registered on the national Petlog database.
If your rabbit is lost, reunification is much quicker once the microchip is scanned and your details are retrieved from the database.
A specially formulated, palatable liquid rabbit wormer can be given to help prevent and treat internal parasites, including Encephalitozoon cuniculi.
Neutering for both does and bucks can be carried out from 4 months of age.
Neutering is recommended to:
Reduce unwanted behaviours
Prevent certain health issues
Allow safe bonding between rabbits
Rabbits can be trained to live indoors with you as house rabbits.
With appropriate training and enrichment, rabbits can adapt well to an indoor lifestyle and form strong bonds with their owners.
