Neutering

Safe and effective surgical procedures to prevent unwanted pregnancies, reduce health risks and support balanced behaviour in pets.

Why Neutering Matters

Neutering is a routine veterinary procedure recommended to prevent unwanted pregnancies and reduce certain health and behavioural issues in pets.

While surgery can be performed from as early as three months of age in some cases, our general recommendation is between 5–6 months, depending on the species and individual health of your pet.

Dogs

Neutering in dogs is recommended to prevent unwanted pregnancies, reduce behavioural issues and minimise the risk of certain diseases.

Surgery can be performed from around 3 months of age, although 5–6 months is typically advised.

Health and Behavioural Benefits

  • Prevents unwanted pregnancies and helps control population
  • Reduces risk of testicular cancer (males)
  • Prevents uterine infections such as pyometra (females)
  • Can reduce roaming and mating-driven behaviours
  • May decrease aggression linked to hormones
  • Prevents heat cycles in females when spayed early

Cats

Cats are typically neutered from around 4–6 months of age. The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic and includes spaying (females) or castration (males).

Why Neutering Cats is Recommended

  • Prevents pregnancy — cats can breed from as early as 4 months
  • Reduces roaming and risk of accidents
  • Decreases aggressive behaviour and fighting
  • Lowers risk of infected wounds
  • Reduces urine spraying, especially in males
  • Significantly lowers risk of mammary cancer in females
  • Prevents uterine infections

Rabbits

Male rabbits can often be neutered from around 12 weeks once the testicles have descended. Female rabbits are typically neutered from 4–6 months.

The timing should always be assessed by a veterinarian familiar with rabbit health and development.

Benefits for Rabbits

  • Prevents unwanted litters
  • Reduces territorial and hormonal aggression
  • Helps bonded rabbits live together peacefully
  • Significantly reduces risk of uterine cancer in females
  • Improves overall wellbeing and social behaviour
